The base as it looked in the early 1960's during Project Oxcart. In the upper portion of the photo are the old Navy Barracks brought in from Hawthorne Naval Station to house the workers at Groom Lake. The rear hangars were the U-2 hangars used for Project Idealist in the late 1950's. Also in the rear of photo are the administration and operations buildings. The four large hangars in the forground are the hangars that Project Oxcart used for the A-12 and YF-12 flights. During Projects Have Drill and Have Ferry, these hangars housed the MiG 17s and 21s being evaluated for their effectiveness against American aircraft in Vietnam. Later they became known as "Red Hat Hangars". The large building on the left is the Base Supply and Administration Building. Next to it is the Dining Hall and the Base Headquarters. On the far right is the recreation complex, including "Sam's Place", a gym and swimming pool. Behind it, partly out of the frame, the baseball field.
