It was designed around the wrong concepts and wasnt even fitted was a gun until it became obvious that our flashy new missles were sucking. All the speed that it had couldnt give it air-superiority over the rickity little migs that were able to outmanoever it. It was very unforgiving and had terrible handling characteristics according to both the Blue Angels and a former F-4/F-100 pilot that I know. The thing that it was probably best at was getting shot down. Best fighter today? The argument rages on... Best fighter of all time? P-51D Everything that makes it functional makes it beautiful. Technically the aircraft is still very deadly and performs well by todays standards. The actual aircraft themselves are just old and the US doesnt wanna build new ones. EA-18G ftw! At least at this site everybody seems open-minded and reasonable when talking about it (search 'Sukhoi' or 'F-22' on Youtube and you'll see what i mean). I think that no one can really say positively what aircraft would win because there are a lot of things that are in development, classified, being tweaked and/or still being tested on all three aircraft. Put all the finished production models in a wargame exercise and then see what happens maybe or wait for WWIII and read the combat reports. I've given up trying to decide which one of these amazing aircraft is better than the rest. I love them all because they are each shining examples of advancement and technology. The enemy were fighting today does not have much or any aircraft and/or anti-aircraft that can really pose a threat to our B-52s. As long as were only in a war with these 'sand people' with thier AKs, Car-bombs and Gaffi sticks, the B-52 should be fine to carry out its missions. In a major war with a modern nation however the B-52's would prolly be put aside for the B-2s and B-1bs who can evade todays air defences far better than the old Buff Everything that makes it functional makes it beautiful. That thing has backup systems for the backup systems just to backup the backup systems. An armored tub, belly-landing-friendly (purpose of main gears placement parially exposed) and two of EVERYTHING makes it pretty safe in my book.
